Numeracy is important to nursing in order to drug administration, Drug prescribing, Fluid balance calculation, Children’s nutritional needs, Intravenous fluid requirements/rates, Calculations related to weight/BMI , I find it hard to remember a time when I wasn’t interested in maths. It Was always my favourite subject at school, but even before that I know I liked play with numbers. Well the reason why I like math is because I am a visual learner. When teachers do examples on the board I can see exactly what is going on. It makes it simple and straightforward for me I also enjoy Math because I like how everything is either right or wrong there is no in between. Also, maths is a game and fun when you get this really hard problem and you finally figure it out. When I was second semester i was too scared to get 90% and above the drug calculation exam, however it is basically ratio/proportion and basic algebra. The other thing I was needed to be concerned with is converting from one unit of measure to another.
Administration , Plotting and recording data . Accurate mathematical calculation is a critical skill that nurses must demonstrate in order to administer medications safely. The consequences of getting a calculation wrong could be life threatening. It is of concern that these student nurses did not have the ability to perform drug calculations at a 90% mastery level. It has been recommended that admission requirements be reviewed, and that students are tested throughout their programme and that skills are reinforced both in the classroom and practice setting. This could be achieved using a variety of methods, supporting a teaching and learning framework to integrate analytical and procedural competence underpinned by the creation of national standards. Also, both educators and practitioners must take responsibility for ensuring adequate support and guidance is available to student nurses.
